John Medeski

Keyboard master John Medeski thrives on the unpredictable, a trait that has kept his work fresh and surprising throughout his decades-long career. While he’s best known for his buoyant, organ-centric approach to jazz as a part of trailblazing trio Medeski Martin & Wood, Medeski’s solo efforts represent a different side of his prodigious artistry. His first solo piano project, A Different Time, is a more introspective collection, recorded on a 1924 Gaveau piano and released on Sony Classical’s newly-revived OKeh records imprint in 2013. Medeski’s restless muse has engendered a dizzying array of projects. He has collaborated with modern music giants Vernon Reid, Jack Bruce and Cindy Blackman-Santana to form Spectrum Road, and with award-winning avant-garde composer John Zorn on Nova Express. Medeski also worked with Grammy-winning Peruvian singer Susanna Baca, renowned saxophonist James Carter, and legendary jazz and rock guitarists John Scofield, Lee Renaldo and Nels Cline. Medeski is a frequent guest with Phil Lesh’s band, Phil & Friends. Together with the North Missisippi Allstars and pedal steel guitarist Robert Randolph, Medeski formed the gospel supergroup The Word, releasing their second album, Soul Food, in 2015.
