Mark Stryker: “Jazz from Detroit”

Mark Stryker is an author and awardwinning arts reporter and critic based in Detroit. His first book, “Jazz from Detroit,” will be published in summer 2019 by the University of Michigan Press. Stryker covered jazz, classical music and the visual arts for the Detroit Free Press from 19952016. His many national prizes include two ASCAP Deems Taylor Awards for music writing about bassist Ron Carter and composer Elliott Carter, as well as several awards for coverage of the Detroit Institute of Arts and City of Detroit bankruptcy. Born in Bloomington, Ind., he grew up as a jazz saxophonist, before turning to journalism. He collects records, vintage hats, and drinks the finest OldWorld wine he can afford. He is currently at work on a book about the 100th anniversary of historic Orchestra Hall in Detroit.
