Rhode Island Music Educators Association Sr. All-State Jazz Ensemble

In 2012, the RIMEA Sr. All-State Jazz Band was invited to perform at the Newport Jazz Festival, in a surprise announcement at the All-State Concert held at URI. Since that time close to 80 students have had the opportunity to showcase their talent at this iconic festival in their home state.

The RIMEA Sr. All State Jazz Ensemble represents the best RI high school jazz musicians and this year the students come from 7 different schools: Barrington High School, Bishop Hendricken, East Greenwich High School, South Kingstown High School, West Warwick High School, Cranston High School West, and Westerly High School. In addition to having the opportunity to play at the Newport Jazz Festival, one student each year is awarded a $5,000 scholarship from festival sponsor Natixis.

This year the band is directed by jazz trombonist and Rhode Island’s own, Artie Montanaro. Mr. Montanaro is currently in his 32nd year of teaching at the Cranston High School West in Cranston RI. He has traveled with the Buddy Rich and Artie Shaw Orchestras but this is his debut appearance at the Newport Jazz Festival. Today’s performance will include music from the John Allmark Jazz Orchestra library and the band would like to extend their appreciation for the opportunity to play these unique RI arrangements.
